Find Your Ancestors

The 1889ers Society welcomes all people, but we give special distinction to those who are descendants of those who "made The Run of 1889" into the Oklahoma Territory.  To qualify, you must know the legal description of the land your ancestors homesteaded. Now there's a new tool.  The Oklahoma Genealogical Society has published a CD-ROM so you can just look in your computer to find the start of the trail of your ancestors. It provides Township, Range, Section and County of the land, as well as the Volume & Page of the tract books.  Most importantly it is searchable by Last Name, First Name & Date of homestead.   That's enough to become a Descendant Member and it's a good start for your genealogy study.

"Destination Oklahoma" The New Airport Exhibit Print E-mail
The 1889ERS Society Airport Exhibit is an Official Oklahoma Centennial Exhibit ! The 1889ERS Society has had an historical display at the Will Rogers World airport for over 20 years. The display had to be dismantled in 2004 because of new construction at the airport.    Airport construction is now complete and it is time for a new historical exhibit.     It has been recognized by the Oklahoma Capitol Complex and Centennial Commoration Commission  as an official Oklahoma Centennial Exhibit.

The 1889ERS Board and Membership approved the new exhibit at the Christmas meetings on December 9, 2006.   It is an interactive video exhibit sponsoredby The 1889ERS Society featuring many of the historical sites and organizations in central Oklahoma... The Oklahoma Territory and, coincidentally, the area served by Will Rogers World Airport.

Airport visitors can select videos from a variety of history-oriented organizations: many choices of places and things to see.

The exhibit design is extremely simple to provide unexcelled reliability and ease of use. It is an industrial DVD player and a plasma video screen controlled by arcade-quality pushbuttons, enclosed by a 5’ x 5’ oak corral.

The Content
The purpose of the exhibit is to showcase historical sites and organizations in central Oklahoma. The presentation consists of short video segments selectable by the visitor. Each organization provides a video segment, one to three minutes, about its attractions. This is especially significant during Oklahoma’s Centennial.

There is great diversity among Oklahoma historical sites and we want to be as inclusive as possible. These are some of the interested organizations :
  • "I love the idea. We are definitely interested."
Linda Haller – Director of Public Relations National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum
  •  “Absolutely!”
Bob McCoy - Executive Director - The Oklahoma Telephone Pioneers Museum
  • “We would be interested. We need to create a presence at the airport”
Dan Provo – Director – The Oklahoma Museum of History
    “Excellent idea.”
Kathy Montgomery – Executive Director – Guthrie Chamber of Commerce
  • “This can be a good service for our smaller historical organizations.”
Kay Hunt – Executive Director – Frontier Country Marketing Association
  • “We want to participate.” Richard Hendricks – Executive Director – Oklahoma Sports Museum
(Obligitory Disclaimer:  These comments came from telephone conversations with Bob Howard during the week of October 16, 2006.  The comments reflect the opinions of the individuals, not necessarily those of their organizations.  Everyone said something similar to "...well, of course we would have to take the idea to the Committe/Board/Membership, etc."   There were no official commitments as of 10/18/06.)

Aprovals
The Airport Direct has given the 'go ahead' for the new exhibit, but of course the project must go through several other committees.   The 1889ERS Board and membership have approved the construction.

Summary
Over the years, The 1889ERS Society received many positive comments on its historical exhibit at the airport. As a public service, it is time to update the display and feature other historical sites and organizations in central Oklahoma.
